In recent days, there has been a lot of speculation about who should become the new captain of the Dutch Team. Virgil van Dijk is by far the most often mentioned and that is not surprising for teammate Georginio Wijnaldum. Nevertheless, the current call for Van Dijk as captain gives the midfielder of Liverpool a double feeling.
“When he was still playing with Southampton, you didn’t hear anyone say that, even though he already had the same qualities at the time. The theory that footballers get more status because they play at a certain club: I don’t believe so”, says Wijnaldum in conversation with the Algemeen Dagblad. I think that as a player, you get status by performing on the pitch, not because you play at one club or at another. In my experience, that doesn’t work like that.
Wijnaldum agrees that Van Dijk has the personality for leadership: “He is a player who talks a lot in the field, who is busy with the team, with his teammates. He did so from the very first moment at Liverpool”, concludes the midfielder, who notices that the Reds have improved as a result of the arrival of Van Dijk: “You only have to look at the statistics to see that we have performed better at Liverpool since his arrival this winter. Virgil really adds something to our team.
