Wout Weghorst could leave VfL Wolfsburg next summer. Among the successor candidates is the 18-year-old young international Pepi.
Lukas Nmecha or Wout Weghorst? For Florian Kohfeldt, that’s the wrong question. As the new coach of VfL Wolfsburg, the only reason he didn’t use Weghorst and Nmecha in all three games was because Weghorst was absent with an injury during Kohfeldt’s debut in Leverkusen (2:0).
Nevertheless, it would be no surprise if Weghorst were to leave VfL in 2022. The 29-year-old Dutchman is now in his fourth season in the Wolves’ jersey, but next summer the thought of a departure one year before the end of his contract is likely to become more concrete than ever.
Those responsible in Wolfsburg are aware of the attacker’s desire to take another step in his career – and they are preparing for the future accordingly. This will not include Daniel Ginczek, whose contract is expiring. The Polish Bartosz Bialek, who is expected back in January after tearing his cruciate ligament, but they are also looking externally in case Weghorst leaves.
With Pepi, the competition is huge
VfL have thrown their hat into the ring for FC Dallas’ US striker hopeful Ricardo Pepi, who has scored 13 times in 31 MLS appearances so far this season and has three goals in four internationals. “An interesting player,” says VfL sports director Marcel Schäfer. However, there is no question of an agreement with the 18-year-old, as was recently reported. And the competition for Pepi is huge.
