Watzke: “Adding someone who feels like a decision-maker is not necessary”

Former technical director Edin Terzic is now coach, former licence player manager Sebastian Kehl is now sports director: The change in the duo’s posts means that there are two vacancies at Borussia Dortmund for the new season. It has not yet been decided whether they will be filled. However, according to club boss Hans-Joachim Watzke, there is a tendency.

For years, Michael Zorc was solely responsible for the sporting side of Borussia Dortmund as sporting director. In 2018, former BVB captain Sebastian Kehl joined as head of the professional players’ department, and in 2021, previous co- and interim coach Edin Terzic became technical director, expanding the management circle.

This summer, however, this structure is being completely shaken up: Zorc has left the club, Kehl has moved up a position and Terzic will be BVB’s head coach in future following the separation from Marco Rose. So two positions are currently vacant: there is neither a head of the professional players’ department nor a technical director. And that could, in all likelihood, remain so.

The club boss Hans-Joachim Watzke is currently discussing whether to fill the two posts, but reveals a tendency: “It’s not necessary to add someone who then also feels like a decision-maker.” On the other hand, it is conceivable that Kehl will be given someone to support him in his work as sports director. However, a “final decision” has not yet been made on this, says Watzke: “It would also work as it is at the moment. “

What is certain, however, is that Terzic will be joined by a second – experienced – assistant in addition to his confidant Sebastian Geppert. “That is a model,” Watzke confirms. “It is Edin’s wish to bring in someone who has a wealth of experience with whom he can exchange ideas. We are trying to find a solution there. “

Hermann, the logical candidate

For days, Peter Hermann has been talked about for this post, who seems to be the logical candidate due to his CV. At the moment, the 70-year-old, who previously worked as a co-coach at Schalke, Leverkusen and Munich, among others, is still employed by the DFB as an assistant to U-20 national coach Christian Wörns.
