There was a lot of excitement after the Istanbul city derby between Galatasaray and Fenerbahce. At the center of the storm was José Mourinho, who has now received a severe punishment.
On Thursday, the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) announced that José Mourinho would be suspended for four games and fined almost €42,000 for his recent misconduct in the Istanbul derby.
The Portuguese coach was punished for his derogatory comments about Turkish referees and the players of Galatasaray Istanbul. Cim Bom was particularly outraged, with Galatasaray announcing via the short message service X that “due to José Mourinho’s racist comments, criminal proceedings will be initiated and official complaints will be filed with UEFA and FIFA”.
Galatasaray accused the 62-year-old of repeatedly making disparaging comments about the Turkish people, but this time his mere immoral comments escalated into clearly inhuman rhetoric.
TFF does not follow Fenerbahce’s argument
After the clash between the two teams, Mourinho had said that players on the Galatasaray bench had jumped around “like monkeys” and, as he had done so often recently, he also complained about what he saw as the unprofessional refereeing in Turkey. Mourinho had received backing from his employer, so Fener argued that the coach’s statement had been “completely taken out of context and deliberately distorted”.
The TFF saw it differently and ruled that Mourinho’s comments were a violation of “sportsmanship”. And Mourinho? He has not yet commented on the matter.
