Once again, the in-form Warsteiner doesn’t concede a set. Now there could be a rematch against last year’s winner
Jan-Lennard Struff has continued his remarkable run on the ATP Tour and reached the round of 16 at the clay court Masters in Madrid. The 34-year-old from Warstein won 7:5, 6:4 against Frenchman Ugo Humbert, his sixth consecutive match without losing a set. Struff won his first title in Munich last week.
In Madrid, he is confidently building on the biggest success of his career to date. He feels at home in the “Caja Magica” anyway, last year Struff surprisingly reached the final of the top event and only lost to Spain’s exceptional player Carlos Alcaraz. Now there could be revenge if Alcaraz (20) wins against Thiago Seyboth Wild (Brazil).
In this form, Struff need not fear the Wimbledon winner. He picked up the pace in the decisive moments against Humbert, who is ranked number 14 in the world tennis rankings. A late break in the first set and an early break in the second set decided the match. Struff didn’t even concede a break point on his own serve.
Struff’s Davis Cup colleagues Alexander Zverev (Hamburg) and Daniel Altmaier (Kempen) are also in action on Sunday. Zverev will play the Canadian Denis Shapovalov in the evening, while Altmaier will face the Polish top 10 player Hubert Hurkacz in the afternoon.
