VfB give the all-clear for Undav

Deniz Undav could be available to play against Frankfurt on Sunday after VfB Stuttgart gave the all-clear after he was substituted against Bergamo.

A first indication that Deniz Undav was not seriously injured came from the association on Thursday morning: the VfB Stuttgart attacker was in national coach Julian Nagelsmann’s squad for the upcoming Nations League games against Bosnia-Herzegovina (November 16) and Hungary (November 19). In the meantime, Undav’s employer has also given the all-clear.

According to VfB, the 28-year-old sustained a strain on the back of his left thigh in the Champions League home game against Atalanta Bergamo (0-2) on Wednesday evening. Undav’s availability for the Bundesliga clash with Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday is questionable, but not out of the question. This means that Nagelsmann, who is bringing his national players together in Frankfurt on Monday, can also count on Undav.

Undav had a tough few minutes shortly after the start of the second half against Atalanta: He was unable to secure a pass that led to the goal from former Leipzig player Ademola Lookman, with his teammates then missing several opportunities to stop the visitors’ attack. And a little later, Undav was sitting on the pitch, injured, and immediately indicated that he needed to be substituted.

Darf Demirovic gegen Frankfurt beginnen?

Undav, who was later seen with a heavily bandaged thigh, had a tough time against the aggressively defending Serie A third, as did the rest of the VfB offense. The fact that he only hit the side netting from a tight angle in the 45th minute was typical of his committed but luckless performance. Erdemin Demirovic replaced him from the 55th minute and should have a chance of starting against Frankfurt, even though he was also unable to make much of an impact.

In 15 competitive appearances so far this season, Undav has scored six goals and provided one assist. In his two international appearances in 2024/25, he impressed with a goal and an assist against the Netherlands (2:2) and a brace in a 2:1 away win against Bosnia-Herzegovina, with VfB teammate Demirovic in the Stuttgart side.
