Tennis fans had been looking forward to a comeback by former world number one Venus Williams. But it’s not going to happen after all.
Seven-time Grand Slam tournament winner Venus Williams will not be returning to the tennis tour for the time being. The 44-year-old American had turned down a wildcard for the Masters 1000 tournament in Indian Wells in March, tournament director Tommy Haas announced. The former German professional did not give a reason for this in the statement on the platform X.
It was only on Wednesday that the organizers in California announced that Williams would be returning after a break of almost a year. She last competed in early 2024, when she failed in the first round in Indian Wells and at the subsequent Masters in Miami.
The former number one is now only ranked 975th in the world.
