At the end of December, Virgil van Dijk made the transition from Southampton to Liverpool for the sum of 84.5 million euros, making the Dutchman the most expensive defender ever. Van Dijk, who was immediately impressed in his debut match by capturing the decisive 2-1 inside against Everton in the third round of the FA Cup, is not burdened with the high transfer sum.
“It doesn’t make me nervous. It is a great compliment to myself and to the hard work I have done so far that Liverpool is prepared to pay so much money for me. I can’t change anything about that,”says Van Dijk in conversation with Jamie Carragher on behalf of Sky Sports. Chelsea and Manchester City were also interested in the defender, but the Orange-international eventually signed at Liverpool.
Asked why he chose the Reds, Van Dijk replied:”I think the size of the club, the fans, the players, the manager (Jürgen Klopp, ed.)… The total package is great here. You can see yourself playing in this atmosphere, every home game is great to experience. I’m just very happy to play for this club”, concludes the former defender of Celtic and FC Groningen.
