It has been a difficult year by Federer’s high standards, with his shock exit in Wimbledon being a particular down point. The 36-year-old has been vying with Nadal for the best part of ten years and this year they have shifted between 1st and 2nd ranking several times already. Federer may not have admitted it but he will be hoping to add some more titles to his huge collection before he eventually hangs up his racquet.
Federer wins in straight sets
This week he set out his intentions very clear with a 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Yoshihito Nishioka.

The New York crowd is notorious for being hard to please but Federer ensured that they had plenty to cheer about with an exciting game-plan and some shots that drew gasps of awe.
Wowing the crowd
He played two backhands down the line from the back of the court to show the crowd that he can turn it on when he needs to. At 5’7” his opponent was giving up eight inches, making it a very difficult test for the 22-year-old. Whilst Nishioka currently occupies the 177th place in the ATP rankings, he had a great year last year, which saw him rise to No. 58 before he picked up a knee injury.
Federer vs Paire in next round
Federer has secured a second-round match against Benoit Paire tomorrow and he will actually be giving away four inches to the tall Swiss player. In their previous six encounters, Federer has won all six, with the most recent being the Halle Open in Germany earlier this year where he won by two sets to one.
