Wimbledon winner Novak Djokovic will be absent as expected from the tennis tournament in Montreal, Canada, which begins on Monday. The Serb is not allowed to enter the country because of his continued lack of vaccination against the coronavirus.
The 21-time Grand Slam tournament winner has now withdrawn his participation, the organisers announced. The USA also requires proof of vaccination for entry. Therefore, Djokovic’s participation in the US Open, the last Grand Slam tournament of the tennis season, from 29 August to 11 September in New York, remains open.
The 35-year-old is on the entry list for the tournament. However, the organisers have stressed that they respect the entry regulations of the USA regarding the coronavirus. With few exceptions, vaccination against the coronavirus is still a prerequisite to enter the country. After winning his seventh title at the grass-court classic at Wimbledon, Djokovic had reiterated that he does not plan to be vaccinated against the virus and is hoping for an exemption.
