“Unique riding style” – Triumph amazed by Moto2 rookie Pedro Acosta

Moto3 World Champion Pedro Acosta surprises Moto2 engine supplier Triumph: The British are convinced that the 2022 gearbox is an advantage for rookie Acosta

edro Acosta’s path led straight to the Moto2 World Championship after just one season in Moto3. As world champion, the sensational rookie of the past Moto3 season was promoted to the middle category and already made a strong impression during the winter tests. Steve Sargent of engine supplier Triumph is enthusiastic about the Moto2 rookie.

“Pedro has a unique riding style as well as talent. Kalex engineers have reported that he uses the rear brake much more than his rivals.”

The Triumph manager goes into detail: “This became clear, for example, during pre-season in Jerez. In the fast left-hand corner, almost all the Moto2 riders went off the gas. He, on the other hand, rode at full throttle and regulated the speed with the brake. “

In the first Moto2 race of his career, Pedro Acosta finished in twelfth position (see race report of the Qatar race). But the result is only half the truth.

From tenth on the grid, Acosta suffered a poor start and lined up in penultimate position after an incident with Jake Dixon and Fermín Aldeguer at turn 1. In the course of the race, Acosta fought his way through the field and made up 16 positions. Some experts see Acosta as the next Marc Marquez.

Triumph believes Acosta will benefit more from a change to the Moto2 power unit than his more experienced rivals. After three years, Triumph have undertaken a number of changes based on what they have heard over the past three years. The most important change is a tighter gear ratio.

“This gives riders different options in the same corner. For example, you can downshift into second gear or ride in third gear,” explains Steve Sargent, classifying this change as an advantage for the Moto2 rookie.

“This could help him because Acosta doesn’t have any preconceived thoughts yet. So he can decide which gear to use based on his feeling. He doesn’t have to readjust like the other riders do,” said the Triumph manager.
