It is still not clear how many spectators will be allowed to attend Union Berlin’s home match against Wolfsburg on Saturday. The club has now submitted an application.
11,000 spectators watched Union Berlin celebrate a late 1-0 win over Arminia Bielefeld just over a fortnight ago. Next Saturday, 18,000 could be there when the Köpenickers host VfL Wolfsburg at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei.
The Conference League participants have submitted an application to the Senate Department for the Interior and Sport to allow 18,000 stadium visitors for the upcoming match. According to the application, fans should be present on a 3G basis, i.e. recovered from the coronavirus, vaccinated against it or tested negative.
The club says: “As this application has not been decided by 11.10.2021, Union has today (Tuesday) filed an urgent application with the Berlin Administrative Court. The court is to determine that a rigid capacity restriction of 50% is not justified for the 3G model applied for on the basis of a detailed hygiene concept for the match against Wolfsburg.”
“As the RKI announced last week, apparently around 80% of adults in Germany are already fully vaccinated,” says President Dirk Zingler. “So the vaccination campaign is having an effect. We therefore continue to focus on persuasion and easy accessibility of vaccination offers. In Berlin today, 2.5 million people are vaccinated or have recovered. That is almost 500,000 more than in our first match with a 50 percent coverage at the end of July. This has not yet led to an adjustment of the upper limit of 11,006 people in our stadium. We have therefore turned to the Berlin Administrative Court, also due to the lack of a decision by the sports and health administration. “
