At Union Berlin, they look forward to the coming weeks without fear, even though there are plenty of English weeks ahead because of the three competitions. Goalkeeper Andreas Luthe, who is experiencing a wedding of his career, is also deeply relaxed.
Andreas Luthe kept his interview partners waiting a bit on Tuesday lunchtime. But the goalkeeper of 1. FC Union Berlin was not to blame for the delay. In the long training week until the next home game of the Eisernen on Saturday (3.30 p.m.) against VfL Wolfsburg, training will only take place once a day. But these sessions are a little longer.
Luthe took it easy on the weekend off and switched off completely. He also didn’t watch on TV how his internationally busy teammates did with their national teams.
In the meantime, however, he is drawn back to football day. Interestingly, one thing has remained the same. Union is in seventh place, as it was at the end of last season. Can Union maintain this position? “We went into the season with the same objective as last season: Collect 40 points as quickly as possible and keep the class,” said Luthe. “I don’t see any reason to change that when it got us to seventh place last year. We’ve had good opponents, but we are competitive. “
Luthe is felt to be without competition in his position
Luthe is felt to be without competition in his position, however. Rival Frederik Rönnow recently made his competitive debut for Union in the group stage of the Europa Conference League against Maccabi Haifa (3:0). But that was only due to a rotation as part of the triple load.
Luthe doesn’t raise a fuss about it. He usually puts in solid performances. Only in the European Cup match at Slavia Prague (1:3) did he not have such a good day. There is no doubt about his position. Luthe has long since become a crowd favourite. Union supporters regularly chant “Luthe, Luthe” during matches when Luthe flies through for a save or picks down a cross.
Luthe: “The chants are the icing on the cake “
Luthe has already experienced such chants in Augsburg and Bochum. Now he enjoys them just as much. “The chants are the icing on the cake and not to be taken for granted. I am happy about it. It’s a complement from the spectators,” explained Luthe.
Perhaps there will also be that after the home game against Wolfsburg, against whom Union has never won in the Bundesliga. But the task will not be easy. Luthe again counts VfL among the circle of teams that can qualify for the Champions League.
