Unanimously elected: Ter Stegen is the new Barcelona captain

The FC Barcelona team has made its decision: Their new captain with immediate effect is Marc-André ter Stegen

FC Barcelona kicked off the new La Liga season with a 2-1 win at Valencia FC last weekend. However, the Blaugrana had not yet officially appointed a new captain. That will now change in Saturday’s clash with Athletic Bilbao.

In an internal team vote, Marc-André ter Stegen has been named as the new leader of the Catalans. The 32-year-old keeper succeeds long-serving FCB professional Sergi Roberto, who last represented the team as captain and has now moved to Italy to join promoted Como 1907 (coached by Cesc Fabregas) after his contract expired.

The fact that ter Stegen was chosen was announced by FC Barcelona themselves on their own channels early on Friday evening

The news is not all that surprising, given that the 40-time DFB player has deputized for Sergi Roberto on several occasions recently – for example, when the latter has not played from the start. Now the veteran, who has been playing for FCB since 2014 and has the best chance of becoming the new No. 1 in the DFB kit following Manuel Neuer’s retirement from the national team, is always wearing the armband

Ter Stegen’s deputy

The 414-time FCB player ter Stegen is followed by his elected representatives Ronald Araujo, Frenkie de Jong, Raphinha and Pedri – also because another candidate, Ilkay Gündogan (33), has already left after just one year in Catalonia and returned to ManCity.
