Basketball Bundesliga side ratiopharm Ulm have promoted former international Anton Gavel to head coach. The 37-year-old will receive a two-year contract, the club announced on Saturday.
Gavel previously coached Ulm’s farm team, the OrangeAcademy, in the third-class ProB. Now he is promoted to head coach and succeeds Jaka Lakovic, who left Ulm after three years for the Spanish top club CB Gran Canaria.
“Anton has been with us at the club for three years now,” said Ulm’s sporting director Thorsten Leibenath, who was the “first point of contact”: “Like Jaka, Anton is a former player who played at the highest level and collected titles. Especially in terms of credibility and conveying experience, that is an exceptionally big plus. “
Five times German Champion and Cup Winner
The former set-up player Gavel played internationally for Slovakia and also for Germany, in the Bundesliga he played for Brose Bamberg and Bayern Munich for many years, became German champion five times and won the cup five times. In 2019, he then began his coaching career with the OrangeAcademy, which he most recently led to the ProB play-off semi-finals.
“I will work hard to continue the steady development of Ulm basketball,” Gavel underlined. “The OrangeCampus offers outstanding conditions for this. We play in the BBL and the Eurocup, and this challenge not only appeals to players and fans, but also to me as a coach.
