UFC 230: Chris Weidman v Luke Rockhold at MSG New York

The latest news around UFC 230 is all about the potential fight between Chris Weidman and Luke Rockhold. Sources closely involved in the organisation of the event have revealed that the agreement is almost in place.

For the last two years, Weidman has been biding his time after a neck injury stopped him from getting the rematch he so badly wanted with Rockhold. Now it looks like his patience has paid off, with the rematch likely to take place at Madison Square Garden on 3 November.

The history between Weidman and Rockhold

Luke Rockhold

Rockhold took Weidman’s title back at UFC 194 in December 2015. At the time, Weidman held the second longest title reign in middleweight history, making the loss even more painful for him. Additionally, that was his first ever career loss, with him then going on to lose his next two fights against Romero and Mousasi. The first fight was at the MSG, whilst the second was in his hometown in front of 12,000 fans.

The stats:

Luke Rockhold is 33 years old, weighs 185 lbs and is 6’3” tall. His fight history shows 16 wins and 4 losses.

Chris Weidman is a year older at 34, weighs 185 lbs and is 6’2” in height. His fight history is 14 wins and 3 losses.

The form

Rockhold’s last fight resulted in a loss to Yoel Romero in February 2018 at UFC 221.

Weidman won his last fight via submission against Kelvin Gastelum in July 2017 but he has not been able to compete since then with numerous surgeries on a problem thumb injury.

Rockhold was rumoured to be contemplating a switch to light heavyweight but a leg injury put that idea on hold. Weidman will be very keen to get some revenge after having to wait so long to get his rematch and attempt to make amends for losing his title to Rockhold.
