Tyron Woodley is back to defend his title after a shoulder injury has kept him out since July 2017. His first fight will be against Darren Till in Dallas at UFC 228 on 8 September. The welterweight champion takes on Till, after the interim welterweight champion, Colby Covington asked for more recovery time following his five-round fight three months ago. This was when he defeated Rafael dos Anjos. So Till will be stepping into the Octagon instead.
Shock as Darren Till is named as contender instead of Covington
Tyron ‘The Chosen One’ Woodley will be hoping his form continues where it left off. His last six fights included five wins and one draw. Darren Till hails from Liverpool in England and has 17 wins and one draw to his name. Nicknamed ‘The Gorilla’, Till is the surprise opponent for Woodley, as everybody had assumed that Covington would be the contender for the welterweight belt. The powers that be at UFC decided that they did not want to wait for Covington, probably because of the pay-per-view money they would lose. So it is Darren Till that gets the shot instead.
Darren Till is undefeated in 18 fights – 17 wins and 1 draw
A year away from fighting is a long time, so Woodley might have a real challenge on his hands in the form of Till, who most recently beat Stephen Thompson in May 2018. Till comes with an undefeated record and was catapulted into the UFC limelight when he delivered his first-round knockout of Donald Cerrone at UFC Gdansk. Now he faces Tyron Woodley to challenge for the welterweight title in what is the biggest fight of his career so far.
