According to a media report, the UEFA Super Cup could be reformed and held in the USA. ECA chief executive Nasser Al-Khelaifi would initially neither confirm nor deny this.
“What we are trying to do is to help our competitions grow and develop,” Al-Khelaifi said on Friday after the ECA’s general assembly. The influential association of European football clubs had met in Istanbul. As well as being head of the ECA, Al-Khelaifi is also president of Paris St Germain and also sits on the UEFA executive committee.
First, the British news agency PA had reported that talks were taking place within UEFA about a reform of the UEFA Super Cup. From 2024 onwards, the winners of the Champions League and the Europa League could no longer meet in a single match, but instead compete in a four-team tournament together with the winner of the Europa Conference League and the champion of the US MLS. The competition would then also take place in the USA, which is considered a growth market for European football.
“We have not discussed America specifically, we have not decided anything,” Al-Khelaifi explained. However, “different ideas” were being considered, he added. “For today I cannot confirm anything,” the 48-year-old said. “But why shouldn’t we look at all the possibilities we have to grow our clubs and our competitions? “
