UEFA is now also investigating referee Coote

Now that Premier League referee David Coote has been suspended in England and the FA is investigating, UEFA is also taking action.

As announced on Thursday, UEFA has also opened an investigation into the already suspended British referee David Coote. The European governing body said the investigation concerns possible disciplinary violations by the 42-year-old. An ethics and disciplinary inspector has been appointed to examine the matter.

The European governing body announced that Coote had already been withdrawn from an international assignment this week: “The UEFA Referees’ Committee immediately suspended David Coote until further notice on November 11 – in advance of the upcoming UEFA matches – when it learned of his inappropriate behavior.”

The FA had already suspended Coote on Monday for inappropriate behavior. Two videos had previously circulated on social media. In one clip, Coote is said to be seen allegedly abusing Jürgen Klopp in the most abusive manner. In a second video, it can be heard how important it is that the first clip not be shared.

The English referees’ organization PGMOL had also taken action against Coote. “We are aware of the allegations. David Coote remains suspended until the investigation is complete,” a spokesperson said. “David’s well-being remains of the utmost importance to us and we are committed to providing him with the necessary support during this time. At this point, we are unable to provide any further comments.”

Another video during the European Championships in Germany?

On Wednesday, the Sun also published a video showing a man snorting a white powder. The man’s identity has not been established. According to the report, however, the video is said to show Coote and was taken during the European Championships in Germany.

Coote worked for the video refereeing team at the European Championships. Among other things, he worked as an assistant to VAR Stuart Attwell in the round of 16 between Germany and Denmark (2-0). Michael Oliver refereed the game in Dortmund. Coote has not yet made a public statement about his suspension and the allegations.

Coote has been officiating matches in the English top flight since the 2017/18 season. He has already refereed six Premier League games this season, most recently Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Aston Villa at Anfield on Saturday.
