Jonathan Tah (25) has extended his contract at Bayer Leverkusen ahead of schedule. It didn’t always look like that in the past few months.
When Jonathan Tah was only a noble reserve at Leverkusen about a year ago, a move to Leicester City failed due to timing. This summer, too, there were loose enquiries for the centre-back, who had moved to Bayer 04 from Hamburger SV six years ago.
Now, however, Tah has even extended his contract, which originally ran until 2023, ahead of schedule until 2025. “I feel incredibly comfortable at this club,” said the 13-time international in a club statement. “Early on in my career, I was able to play internationally with Bayer 04, which also helped me find my way into the national team. We always had good players. But right now I have the feeling that something special is being created in Leverkusen. I believe in this team, in this club and I see the chance for us to achieve something extraordinary.”
Under coach Gerardo Seoane, Tah is once again one of the absolute top performers and has been on the pitch for the full distance in every Bundesliga match. “After an extremely impressive and consistent Bundesliga start, Jonathan has never let isolated setbacks get him down,” praised managing director Rudi Völler. “That’s what sets him apart. Instead, he fought all the more and faced every challenge. This attitude is exemplary. Jonathan is someone who moves forward with confidence and who absolutely identifies with Bayer 04 Leverkusen.”
In total, Tah has played 223 games, scored five goals and provided nine assists for Leverkusen. And sports director Simon Rolfes thinks: “He not only takes on a responsible role on the pitch, his word also carries weight off the pitch. Jonathan is versatile and very reflective. He can serve as a good example to many of our young talents of what it means to be a professional. “
