Will the German team win its first medal at the European Judo Championships? Miriam Butkereit and Dena Pohl can hope
The German team can hope to win its first medal at the European Judo Championships in Zagreb. Miriam Butkereit (Halle/Saale) has reached the semi-finals in the 70 kg category in Zagreb and will face Greece’s Elisavet Teltsidou in the fight for a place in the final this evening.
In addition, Dena Pohl (Potsdam) is still in the hopeful round up to 63 kg, where she will first meet Savita Russo (Italy) on her way to a possible small final for bronze.
Agatha Schmidt (up to 63 kg), Giovanna Scoccimarro (up to 70 kg), Alexander Bernd Gabler (up to 73 kg), Dominic Ressel and Timo Cavelius (both up to 81 kg) were the other judoka eliminated early on Friday.
The German judoka missed out on a medal on the first day; the European Championships continue until Sunday. For the German team in Croatia, it’s also about Paris: many German judoka still need qualification points or are fighting internally for an Olympic starting place.
