Tuchel on Lukaku: “It’s not time to laugh at him”

The out-of-form Romelu Lukaku is the topic of conversation ahead of the match in the premier class against Lille. Coach Tuchel also spoke positively about the abolished away goals rule.

Romelu Lukaku has so far fallen short of expectations after his return to Chelsea FC. The Belgian has been particularly out of sorts in the Premier League this year: He has not scored in his four league games so far in 2022. The negative highlight came at the weekend – just seven touches in 90 minutes against Crystal Palace.

Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel has yet to come up with a solution to help the striker, he revealed on Monday. However, he took him to task ahead of the Champions League game against Lille. “It’s not what we want and not what Romelu wants,” the former Bundesliga coach explained at the press conference before the Champions League match. Nevertheless, it was also not the time to “laugh at him and make jokes about him,” the German coach said.

Tuchel sees parallels with Lukaku’s predecessors

The 48-year-old sees parallels with previous Blues attackers in the dip in form. “There’s a history of strikers struggling a bit at Chelsea. It’s obviously not the easiest place in the world for strikers. It is, but I don’t know why,” Tuchel said.

At the press conference, the coach also commented on the abolition of the away goals rule. Although he liked the rule because it added another aspect, at the same time he did not understand why a 3:1 would be a better result than a 2:0. He also sees the rule change having a direct impact on the game. “I had the impression so far that it opens up the possibility of maybe being a bit more offensive. Because you can think about scoring goals and not about conceding goals,” the football coach explained.
