Trio from Bundesliga 2 included: Australia’s squad for the Asian Cup is set

One Bundesliga professional is not included, but three players from the German lower house are: Graham Arnold has named his 26-man Australia squad for the upcoming Asian Cup

Key players Jackson Irvine and attacker Connor Metcalfe from FC St. Pauli and striker John Iredale from SV Wehen Wiesbaden are in the squad.

And probably the most notable professional of the entire Australian squad is also earning his money in the 2nd division: central defender Harry Souttar stayed with the Foxes after Leicester City were relegated from the Premier League and has scored ten goals in 21 international matches.

Goalkeeper Mathew Ryan, formerly with Valencia, Arsenal and Real Sociedad among others, will also be crucial. The 31-year-old now keeps goal for AZ Alkmaar and is still suffering from a fractured cheekbone.

The Socceroos have been drawn in Group B together with India, Syria and Uzbekistan for the Asian Cup, which opens on January 12 (5pm) with a match between hosts Qatar and Lebanon. A total of 24 teams are taking part in the tournament, with six groups of four teams in the group stage.
