Travelers Championship is Gaining Momentum

Bubba Watson $200 000 charity donation Travelers Championship

With the scheduling being so close to the US Open, the Travelers Championship has historically been one that has not gained huge amounts of attention or attracted a long list of the top pros. All of that appears to be changing as this year’s tournament in Cromwell attracted record ticket sales in an exciting set of events that saw Jordan Spieth sink a bunker shot on the 18th to win a playoff.

Bubba Watson celebrates win with generous charity donation

Spieth was just one of the seven top 10 golfers to play at the tournament, with the eventual winner Bubba Watson recording his third Travelers victory after coming from behind. Watson generously donated $200,000 towards The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, which is the tournament’s main beneficiary. The organisation was set up by Paul Newman and it helps children facing serious illnesses by giving them a camp experience. A lovely gesture from Watson.

How play unfolded

Watson shot 7-under 63 in the final round, finishing 17-under and is the first player to win three time in the 2017-18 PGA Tour season. Paul Casey will have been disappointed after he led by four shots as he went into the final round, which he finished 2-over and 14-under overall. The shot of the week was an incredible slam dunk on the 11th by James Hahn, making golf look just too easy.

The PGA named the Travelers as its Tournament of the Year for 2017, showing just how much it means to the players these days. This year saw a purse of $7,000,000 for the tournament that had the likes of Rory McIIlroy, Jason Day and Paul Casey playing for the top prize.

Everybody is looking forward to next year’s Travelers Championship

It is not just the players that love the Travelers Championships, it is also a big winner with the fans too. It could have been very different though, had Travelers Insurance not invested in the course back in 2007 to update it. They renovated the course and also built a stunning new clubhouse worthy of a top tournament. The popularity now seems to be growing year after year and the players and their families will be looking forward to next year already after such a great 2018 tournament.
