The eternal back and forth has now officially come to an end: After the final details were discussed and the obligatory medical check was completed on Monday, the transfer news from both clubs came on Tuesday evening. It was already clear at the end of last season that Lewandowski wanted to leave FC Bayern after eight years and not extend his contract, which runs until 2023. The Pole’s wish to leave Munich this summer, however, was not fulfilled by the German record champions for a long time. The management was convinced that the nine-man would also wear the jersey of FC Bayern in the coming season.
Contract until 2026 in Barcelona
As we all know, that is not the case now, FC Barcelona, Lewandowski’s dream destination, have met FC Bayern’s demands and signed the 2020 and 2021 world footballer to a four-year contract. The exit clause has been set at 500 million euros. If he stays until the end of the contract term, the striker would be 37 years old. In Munich, meanwhile, they are happy about the desired transfer fee – 45 million euros plus five million bonuses. His CV shows that the 33-year-old is worth this sum, even with only one year left on his contract: he has been top scorer in the Bundesliga seven times. With BVB he was twice champion (2011, 2012) and once cup winner (2012).
Lewandowski fills Bayern’s showcase
After his transfer to the German record champions on a free transfer in the summer of 2014, Lewandowski couldn’t stop celebrating. With Bayern, he won eight championships, the cup three times, was a Champions League winner in 2020, club world champion and UEFA player of the year.
Lewandowski had a special moment on the last matchday of the 2020/21 season when “Lewy” scored his 41st goal of the season against Augsburg, breaking Gerd Müller’s age-old record from the 1971/72 season (40 goals).
However, Lewandowski will no longer be able to break one record. Gerd Müller’s 365 Bundesliga goals in the eternal list of goal scorers remain unrivalled. Lewandowski’s tally remains at 312 goals.
