Tottenham’s Bentancur gets off with concussion

The diagnosis for Rodrigo Bentancur is in. The Uruguayan in the service of Tottenham Hotspur “only” suffered a concussion, but will still be out for the time being.

Rodrigo Bentancur had everyone worried on Wednesday in the semi-final first leg of the League Cup against Liverpool (1-0). After an attempted diving header in the sixth minute of the game, he remained motionless on the ground and received medical attention for almost ten minutes. The 27-year-old was then taken to hospital for tests.

It is now known that Bentancur escaped with a concussion, as Spurs announced on Friday. The midfielder has since been allowed to return home, but will not be available to the club for two weeks. This means that he is likely to miss at least four competitive games – including the Europa League clash at TSG Hoffenheim on January 23.

“He’s fine. He feels good,” said Tottenham team manager Ange Postecoglou in a video on the club’s website: ‘I think it’s a few weeks to make sure everything is okay. It was a difficult situation. As I said, luckily everything is fine.’

Selfie provides reassurance

Bentancur had already given a slight all-clear on Wednesday night. He shared a selfie on the Instagram platform showing him next to his partner. He wrote below it: “All good, guys! Thanks for the messages! Congratulations on the win, guys!”

Spurs had won the game 1-0 thanks to a late goal from Lucas Bergvall, inflicting only the second defeat of the season on Premier League leaders Liverpool. The second leg at Anfield, where the north Londoners will be aiming to secure a place in the final, is on February 6.
