The 2018 World Cup’s MVP Luka Modric is one of the best midfielders on the planet. When you have a chance to sign such a player, you don’t reject it. According to beIN SPORTS, Tottenham did just that, opting against signing Real Madrid’s 32-year-old wonderboy.

As you might remember, Tottenham is where Luka Modric made a name for himself as a football player before joining Real Madrid in the summer of 2012. It was one of the finest business moves Los Blancos have ever made. In an era when creative midfielders with passing vision were endangered species, Real had the privilege of rostering one of them.
Luka Modric ready for a new challenge
This summer, rumours started swirling around a potential switch to Inter Milan. After four Champions League titles in five years, Modric appeared to be ready for a new challenge, much like his former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo. The move never materialized, but as it turns out, it wasn’t the only possibility.
Luka Modric was offered to Tottenham, a team that didn’t sign a single player during the transfer window. The decision to reject a player of his quality is baffling, to say the least, but a reason exists nonetheless. Whether that reason is attached to wage demands, contract length, age or something entirely different is not known. However, we can dare to speculate.

There’s one obvious answer peeking out of the keyhole – finances. The Spurs failed to acquire new players due to the ongoing construction of their new €1 billion stadium, an estimate which keeps rising by the day. Chairman Daniel Levy simply couldn’t afford to invest, even at the cost of losing out on Modric.
Mauricio Pochettino already has a set roster, so the lack of new arrivals isn’t as bad as people think it is. Depth is what he could be missing in case injuries strike, but until then, Tottenham remains a championship contender. If they had the funds, the club’s owners would’ve undoubtedly splashed the cash, but considering the circumstances, missing out on Modric isn’t as terrible as it appears at first sight.
