Toto Wolff: Accident during filming with Antonelli in Imola

Mercedes Head of Motorsport Toto Wolff damaged a GT3 car during filming in Imola – but the Austrian remains uninjured in the accident

In the current season of the Netflix series “Drive to Survive”, Mercedes Head of Motorsport Toto Wolff put his son Jack in the kart and let him drive, but after the Formula 1 race in Saudi Arabia, the Austrian got behind the wheel again himself – and promptly caused an accident.

Mercedes was out and about on the Imola Formula 1 circuit this week for filming purposes. In addition to a crew filming for the new season of “Drive to Survive”, Mercedes diamond in the rough Andrea Kimi Antonelli was also there.

Both drove laps in a Mercedes-AMG GT3, but in hindsight Wolff would probably have preferred not to: “My driving skills are not ideal at the moment. During our tests in Imola, I had a problem with the traction control and hit the wall after two laps,” he is quoted as saying by oe24.

Mercedes also confirmed that Wolff “kissed the wall” at the exit of the Rivazza corner. However, the Austrian was uninjured in the incident and was able to complete a few more laps around the circuit after a repair break.

However, the filming of Antonelli suggests that Netflix is keeping an eye on the development of the Mercedes junior and that it could become part of the seventh season, which should be released regularly before the 2025 Formula 1 season.

Not a few people assume that Antonelli will then also have a regular cockpit in Formula 1. The Italian is regarded as one of the greatest talents in motorsport and is already seen by some in the open Mercedes cockpit that Lewis Hamilton will leave behind after his switch to Ferrari.

However, Mercedes is still keeping all its options open and wants to explore its options in the coming months. However, it is quite possible that Antonelli will also be given another cockpit – for example at Mercedes customer Williams.

However, the start of the Formula 2 season has not yet gone as planned for the Italian. Most recently in Jeddah, Antonelli finished sixth in both races and is currently tenth in the championship
