Toppmöller: “We have to find ourselves a bit”

After a strong league phase, Eintracht Frankfurt are among the last eight in the Europa League and can now take a short break. Nevertheless, the 2-0 defeat at AS Roma left the sporting directorate somewhat dissatisfied.

“We didn’t play well today,” said Markus Krösche after the game. ‘We were very cautious, we lacked courage and conviction, even though Roma are an experienced team with good players, of course. They were a bit more experienced there and also a step ahead of us,’ explained the Frankfurt sporting director.

“When you read the names, see how streetwise they are, they’re all players who have also played in other competitions, so it was also a bit of a learning process for us,” the 44-year-old continued, talking about Roma and Mats Hummels.

Krösche is missing ‘courage and conviction’

But what did bother him about his team’s play: “That we didn’t have the courage to go one-on-one. It’s okay if we make mistakes or lose the ball, but today I just didn’t see enough conviction to really want to score and create chances,” he lamented.

“If we want to play a role in the rest of the competition, we have to show a more mature performance,” said Dino Toppmöller on RTL. However, the Eintracht coach also admitted that the past few weeks had not been an easy time for his team: ‘We are losing our absolute go-to guy in the winter. Now we have to find ourselves again a bit.’

Toppmöller is looking forward to “quiet weeks”

The question that now arises for him is “who will step into the breach a bit now. We have to get things rolling again. Not everything that has happened now was normal,” Toppmöller continued. Krösche, on the other hand, put the situation after the league phase in the Europa League, in which the team finished fifth out of 36 teams, into the overall context: ”We have a young team that has already progressed so confidently. We can be happy about that and proud of it.”

Toppmöller is particularly looking forward to the two-week international break in February as a result of directly qualifying for the last sixteen: “I think it can be really valuable for us to have a few quiet weeks in February. We can not only recover physically, but also improve in terms of content.”
