It is only Day 4 at Wimbledon and we have already seen some of the top women’s seeds tumble out of the Grand Slam tournament. Caroline Wozniacki was knocked out yesterday, joining four more of the top eight seeds who have left early. This will be giving some hope to the lower seeds and Britain’s No.1 Johanna Konta could be one of the players who benefit from it.
Today she takes on Dominika Cibulkova at 1pm on the Centre Court. Seeded at 22, Konta will have the backing of the home fans behind her and is favourite to win the second round clash. After last year’s great achievement to become the first British woman to reach the semi-finals at Wimbledon since Virginia Wade, she will be hoping for more of the same this year.
Johanna Konta vs Dominika Cibulkova
Slovakia’s Cibulkova is no. 33 in the rankings, whilst Konta is 24th. They have played three times before, with Cibulkova being victorious in their first match against each other and Konta taking the other two. Konta has struggled this year and will be hoping that a good run in Wimbledon will build her confidence back up. Cibulkova is just 5’3” tall and gives many of the opponents a height advantage but her forehand is one of her main strengths.
Konta really needs to step up her game if she is going to convincingly win in this match but when she is at the top of her game this should be an easy match for her. The Centre Court can be an intimating place for opponents coming up against home players, so that could work in Konta’s favour.
