Becky Lynch unexpectedly wins the women’s title on the rebuilding NXT squad – apparently to draw attention to her at a crucial time for Tuesday’s show.
One of the wrestling market leader’s biggest female stars is returning to the roots of her WWE career.
Becky Lynch, 2019 winner of the inaugural WrestleMania women’s main event against Ronda Rousey and Charlotte Flair, is the new women’s champion of the rebuilding NXT roster. On Wednesday night, the Irishwoman won a title match against previously reigning champion Tiffany Stratton.
“The Man” is thus temporarily back in the place where she pushed the “Women’s Revolution” in WWE in the mid-2010s and lifted women’s wrestling to a new level together with the other “Four Horsewomen” (Flair, Bayley, Sasha Banks). However, this is the first time she has held the NXT Women’s Title.
Becky Lynch to boost WWE NXT
The 36-year-old Lynch had just successfully completed a feud with legend Trish Stratus on the WWE main roster, her new mission is likely to have a strategic background.
The TV contract of NXT (since this year also to be seen on German TV) is due to expire this month, Lynch’s guest appearance will serve to generate a ratings boost – either to strengthen the negotiating position for the new contract or to duly start the new season.
It’s not the first time WWE has used an established star to push NXT: Currently Dominik Mysterio also holds NXT’s North American Title, and three years ago Charlotte Flair moved there for a few months to feud with then-aspiring Rhea Ripley and Io Shirai (Iyo Sky)
The 24-year-old Stratton, who has made several appearances on the main shows recently as part of her programme with Lynch, is also seen as a talent for whom a breakthrough seems destined. The former gymnast – who is in a relationship with German WWE star Ludwig Kaiser – portrays a Paris Hilton-inspired character in NXT as a luxury girl.
