Time of suffering over: Zverev wins home tournament in Hamburg

For the first time since his injury break, Alexander Zverev has won a tournament again. In Hamburg, he fulfilled his dream of a home victory

Olympic tennis champion Alexander Zverev has achieved the long-awaited success at his home tournament at the Rothenbaum in Hamburg.

The German top player defeated Laslo Djere of Serbia 7-5, 6-3 in the final. The 26-year-old is the first German professional since Michael Stich in 1993 to win this year’s €1.832 million ATP clay-court event in the Hanseatic city.

High class final at times

Both players played a high class final in phases in front of 10,000 spectators in the first round. The world number 57 from Serbia challenged Zverev and missed four break points at 4:4. The Hamburg player responded with pressure and ease. He won the set 7-5 with a lob after just over an hour.

In the second set, Zverev took the service game from his opponent at 4:3 and converted his first match point after 1:50 hours. He knelt happily on the clay court of the Centre Court in Hamburg after his first tournament success since the 2021 ATP Finals. It was the first tournament win for Zverev since his serious ankle injury at the French Open last year.
