Tillman on leaving Bayern: “They didn’t want me anymore”

Malik Tillman is spending the international match phase with the US national team. On Thursday, the attacker also talked about his summer move from FC Bayern to PSV Eindhoven.

Malik Tillman is currently preparing for the friendly against Panama (Sunday, 3 a.m., CEST) with the US national team. At a media event in Austin, Texas, on Thursday, the attacker also commented on his permanent summer move.

Last May, it was announced that Tillman would remain with PSV Eindhoven after his loan and would not return to Bayern Munich. At the time, the 22-year-old enthused about his “great” debut season, with hopes of “many titles in the years to come”. He felt he was “in the right place”.

And yet it was obviously not a free decision. Tillman said about the process on Thursday: “The whole thing depended on Bayern and they didn’t want me anymore. PSV had the right to buy me, they were the first option. So I didn’t really have a chance to say anything.”

“I also wanted to stay at PSV”

According to reports, Bayern pocketed a rumored €13 million – and at the same time let the opportunity slip to buy the option from the newly crowned Dutch champions.

But Tillman has no grudges. “I’m still happy at PSV,” he clarified. “I wanted to stay at PSV, so it’s a good thing.” His contract in Eindhoven runs until June 30, 2028.

The native of Nuremberg recorded 20 points (nine goals, 11 assists) in 28 games in his first Eredivisie season. This season, he has four goals and one assist in eight league appearances – all from the starting line-up.

Under head coach Peter Bosz, he is an undisputed starter, and Tillman also played the full 180 minutes in both Champions League games against Juventus (1:3) and Sporting (1:1). Playing time that he would certainly not have had in Munich.
