Behind the two favourites Brazil and Argentina, the tight race in South America’s World Cup qualifying is coming to a head. Bolivia, among others, came back with a victory over Paraguay. Chile, too, is hoping again.
The Bolivians beat Paraguay 4-0 at home to move past their rivals in the standings. The goals were scored by Ramallo (21.), Villarroel (53.), Abrego (84.) and Fernandez (90.+4). At 1:0 for Bolivia, Sanabria missed a penalty (27th).
Bolivia can now hope to qualify for the World Cup again, while Paraguay have to drop out – but still have a chance in a tight qualifying group.
Pulgar sets the course for the Rojas
The same goes for Chile. The Rojas, for their part, will be hoping after a 3-0 (2-0) win over bottom side Venezuela. AC Florence’s Erick Pulgar set the scene with his brace, while Blackburn Rovers’ Ben Brereton made everything clear in the second. With 13 points, Chile are now sixth and within striking distance of Uruguay, who were fifth after losing 4-1 in Brazil and still have a place in the play-offs.
The Eliminatorias continue on 11 November. With a current 15-point lead over fifth place, Brazil could qualify for the World Cup finals early with another win against Colombia.
