Bayern’s Thomas Müller took a detour into eSports ahead of the German classic against BVB. Among other things, he talked about his most important final and a weakness on the controller
“Twelve times Bundesliga champion, twice Champions League winner, once world champion. And now also a commentator in eFootball: Thomas Müller really can do it all,” wrote the FIFAe account on X on Thursday. The German international proved a few hours later in the Allianz Arena that he really does have a lot to say about eSports.
Müller was invited by eFootball developer Konami as a guest commentator for the livestream of FC Bayern Munich’s club event finals. The two players who will represent the record champions at the World Finals in Tokyo were determined in the final round. Müller joined the casting crew at 4 p.m. – to coincide with the respective finals on the console and in the mobile version of eFootball 2024.
“Do you have time against Borussia Dortmund? “
FC Bayern Munich is a partner of Konami, so professional footballers are regularly seconded for advertising purposes. In this context, Müller played an intra-team 2vs2 in eFootball some time ago – “perhaps the most important final of my career”, as he joked. It was on the same level as “a certain final in Brazil a few years ago”, Müller added.
Back then, he won the promotional match together with Matthijs de Ligt against Min-Jae Kim and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting. However, Müller did not want to overestimate his skills on the controller. While commentating on the console final, he was amazed by a superbly placed long-range shot that found its way into the virtual goal via the inside of the post.
“I can’t remember shots like that. When I shoot in eFootball, the keeper has an easy game,” said the Bayern professional. The long-range goal was scored by ‘RealFabiano93’, who ultimately won his console final 4:1 against the Japanese player ‘shishi’. “We’re teammates now,” said Müller in the winner’s interview and added: “Do you have time in two days against Borussia Dortmund? “
Small downer for the Munich attacking player: hardly any of the finalists backed his virtual alter ego. “Why doesn’t anyone play Thomas Müller in eFootball? If you’re three goals ahead, you can bring me on for ten minutes,” he jokingly accused ‘RealFabiano93’. However, the 2014 world champion was aware that his digital counterpart did not fit perfectly into the meta.
That’s why he himself would build the Bayern starting eleven in eFootball 2024 around a certain trio. “The dribbling skills of Jamal Musiala, the finishing of Harry Kane and the pace of Leroy Sané” are at the top of his priority list, he says.
While ‘RealFabiano93’ prevailed on the console, Thailand’s ‘Talonesui’ triumphed in the mobile version of the Bavarian club event finals. After 120 goalless in-game minutes, the decision came down to a penalty shoot-out – which ‘Talonesui’ said he won “for the first time ever”. For Müller, like the performance of ‘RealFabiano93’, a reason to “be proud of your achievements.”
