Indian Wells – Daniil Medvedev did not enjoy first place in the tennis world rankings for long. After his third-round exit at Indian Wells, the Russian will be replaced as the industry leader again next Monday by Novak Djokovic.
Medvedev lost 6-4, 3-6, 1-6 to France’s Gael Monfils at the top-seeded event in California on Monday, and the US Open champion would have needed to reach the quarter-finals at Indian Wells to remain at the top of the rankings, which he only took over on 28 February. So Djokovic will be number one again next week, although he is not even competing in Indian Wells.
The Serb, who has still not been vaccinated against the corona virus, was not given permission to enter the USA. Therefore, he will not play in Miami next week, where the next event of the Masters 1000 series is scheduled. If Medvedev plays more successfully there than in Indian Wells, there could be another change.
