In a World Cup where there have been so many goals scored, the goalkeepers have really had their work cut out for them. Going into the tournament, we would have expected the likes of David De Gea and Brazil’s Allison Becker to be in contention for the Golden Glove Award but the great thing about these tournaments is that anything can happen.
Not many people would have expected to see Croatia, Belgium and England in the semi-finals but they got there, through excellent team performances and the heroics of the goalkeepers at times. The French captain Lloris was one of the goalkeepers that were being mentioned before the tournament as a strong candidate for the top goalkeeping award.
Courtois beats Lloris to the Golden Glove
Despite a fumble in the final that led to Croatia scoring an equaliser, Lloris had looked solid throughout the tournament. The Tottenham goalkeeper helped his team to lift the World Cup trophy, so he probably won’t be too disappointed on missing out on the individual award.
Thibaut Courtois led his team to third place, beating England in the Third/Fourth place play-off. He looked commanding in goal and was one of the main reasons Belgium went so far in the tournament.
Courtois could be moving to Real Madrid with Hazard
Now Courtois has a big decision to make about his future. He was interviewed after the match and stated ‘Wherever I go, Hazard must come along.’ Which sounds very much like they are both planning moves to Real Madrid, as both players have been linked with the team. For now, they will go on holiday to recuperate for the new season, either in the Premier League again with Chelsea or in La Liga with Real Madrid.
