SpVgg Greuther Fürth showed a clear improvement before the Bundesliga break, also in Wolfsburg the Franconians held up well. In the 1:4 defeat, however, the team’s play against the ball was particularly lacking.
SpVgg Greuther Fürth were on an equal footing for almost the entire match in Wolfsburg on Sunday evening, although the 1:4 at the end suggests otherwise. “I don’t think we were three goals worse,” commented Paul Seguin on the microphone, and his coach Stefan Leitl also felt the result was “clearly too high”. The Franconians were not much to blame with the ball either, Leitl saw his team “clearly better in possession than Wolfsburg”.
In contrast to previous games, however, Fürth lost a little focus on the game against the ball, even if that was what they actually wanted to define themselves by. “You have to say that we didn’t defend like we have in the last few weeks. When it comes to goals, we turn away, we don’t stand up straight,” Seguin addressed the unfortunate goals conceded in third and fourth. Jamie Leweling and Branimir Hrgota decisively deflected Maximilian Arnold and Philipp’s shots.
“It suited our day “
In addition, goalkeeper Sascha Burchert made a momentous mistake. The keeper, who had been preferred to new signing Andreas Linde, came out of his goal unnecessarily on a long ball and boxed the ball at Aster Vranckx’s feet. “It’s about decisions you make. That was the wrong one. It suited our day then that the ball bounces to the opponent like that,” Burchert saw the fault clearly with himself. However, the goalkeeper also recognised that against Wolfsburg, “for the first time in a few weeks, a few percent were missing”.
The fact that Wolfsburg had played the game down in the final minutes felt “crap”, according to Burchert, as the keeper did not see much difference in performance either. “If you look at the big chances, I didn’t see more with Wolfsburg than with us.” Nevertheless, Burchert still sees the key in the defence, according to Seguin, that now also has to “get back into people’s heads”.
With now twelve points behind 16th place, staying in the league has become a little more unrealistic again, but against Hertha next weekend the cloverleaf could at least keep another team in the bottom of the table. Meanwhile, it is not yet clear who will be in goal against the Berliners. Burchert has “a good relationship with Linde, there is no stress between them. Everything else is a decision of the club”.
