The world’s largest soccer stadium is being built in Morocco

The Grand Stade Hassan II is currently being built in the western Moroccan trading and port city of Casablanca. With 115,00 seats, it will be the largest soccer stadium in the world in the future

The ultra-modern soccer stadium was designed by the Parisian architects Oualalou and Choi and the world’s leading sports design studio Populous. The design was inspired by the traditional Moroccan gathering known as a “moussem”. The stadium is to be built under a large tent roof, which will consist of a unique aluminum grid.

The structure, which is already impressive in its first drafts, will meet FIFA requirements and can therefore be used in the world association’s competitions. It is therefore possible that the final match of the next but one World Cup in 2030 could take place there.

As is well known, Morocco will host this event together with Spain and Portugal.

The stadium will also be home to two local clubs. On a 100-hectare site in the city of El Mansouria in the province of Benslimane, 38 kilometers north of Casablanca, preparations are already underway for the start of earthworks after public funding was approved in October 2023.

The other major sites

The largest stadium in Europe is currently the Camp Nou, which is currently being renovated and hosts FC Barcelona’s home games. It seats almost 100,000 spectators. There is one stadium in the world, in North Korea, with a capacity of 114,000 spectators. This arena is located in Pyongyang and was opened in 1989. However, the North Korean national team only very rarely plays matches there. The team prefers to play in smaller stadiums due to the lack of spectators.

The Aztec Stadium in Mexico City is also a magnificent soccer venue – and has hosted over 100,000 spectators on several occasions. For example, the 1970 World Cup final between Brazil and Italy (4:1). However, the stadium available as a venue for the upcoming 2026 World Cup can no longer accommodate such large capacities today.
