MotoGP veteran Marc Marquez compares the modern era to the time when there were no great innovations in the field of aerodynamics
Marc Marquez first tested the Honda RC213V in late 2012 and completed his first season in MotoGP in 2013. Back then, MotoGP bikes looked less futuristic than they do nowadays. Marquez has fond memories of the time when they still rode without winglets.
“When I came to MotoGP there were no winglets. The show was better then,” the Spaniard looks back and explains why he is not a fan of the winglets: “It was easier to overtake another rider. The slipstream had a greater effect and you felt it more when you were riding behind another rider.”
“Now it can happen that the bike builds up in a strange way when you follow another rider,” Marquez notes, comparing, “Without winglets it was maybe more difficult to pilot the bike. You made a mistake more quickly, but overtaking was easier. “
“Now the bikes are easier to ride. You don’t make a mistake so quickly anymore. You always have to ride precisely and smoothly. But it has become more difficult to overtake and to ride close behind an opponent,” explains the Honda factory rider.
