When Wayne Rooney agreed to his contract with DC United to play in the MLS, it was not a decision he took lightly. His boyhood club Everton would have happily kept him for at least another season and he could have continued to play at the highest level. However, the lure of the MLS was too good to turn down, as well as a good financial package, it meant that his family could enjoy a completely different lifestyle in the US to the one they had in England.
Coleen announces the family move on Twitter
His wife Colleen seems particularly happy with the move, as she announced via Twitter that the whole family were going out to live in America. The Rooney’s will no attract the same attention in the US as they do in England, where everything that they do seems to make the news. Colleen and Wayne will be glad to get away from the English press, given the high profile news stories that have been published including a drink driving incident with another woman and historically cheating on his wife.
A quieter life for the Rooneys
In Washington, there will be less media following the family and Wayne should hopefully be able to concentrate on his football and spending more time with his family. He has already made a good start to his career in the MLS by helping his team to a 3-1 win over Vancouver Whitecaps.
Rooneys have four sons
Their four sons can now enjoy living in America for a few years, a great experience for them all. Colleen may be hoping that the move to America will work for her in the same way it worked for Victoria Beckham. Whilst Victoria was famous before she married David, the Beckham brand and contacts in the US helped Victoria pave a successful fashion design career.
Colleen has dabbled with fashion with Littlewoods, as well as releasing her own fitness DVD and perfume range. So America could be a good place for her to expand her own work and maybe when Wayne hangs up his boots he can stay home with the kids whilst her career takes off.
