The party continues: Vardy extends his contract at Leicester

About a month and a half after their return to the Premier League, Leicester fans have another reason to celebrate. Jamie Vardy has extended his contract

“No Vardy, No Party” – Leicester fans no longer have to worry about this motto for the time being. Because on Friday, the very same Jamie Vardy once again created a party atmosphere – not with one of his numerous goals, but with his contract extension.

The veteran extended his contract, which was originally due to expire in the summer, by a further year. “I’ve always said that age is just a number. My legs feel good, so I’ll keep going until my legs say: ‘That’s it, the game’s over’,” said the 37-year-old.

This is his 13th season with the Foxes. In 2012, he moved from Fleetwood Town to Leicester, who were in the second division at the time – the start of a love affair that included many highs, but also a serious low point with relegation from the Premier League just over a year ago. However, Vardy quickly put that stain behind him with the club close to his heart and celebrated his return to the Premier League with his second Championship title at the end of April.

Top scorer in the Premier League in the 2019/20 season

In addition to the two championships in the English lower house, he also won the FA Cup, the FA Community Shield and, surprisingly, the Premier League in 2016. With 24 goals, the attacker was not only a guarantee for the championship, but was even voted the best player of the season. But he was not only reliable that year. In the 2019/20 season, for example, he was the top scorer in the Premier League with 23 goals. Vardy has scored a total of 190 goals for the Foxes to date – the third most in the club’s history.

According to him, he is not yet thinking about entering his name in the record books. “It’s one of those days when I don’t give myself a chance to think about it. The season is over and you just want to forget about soccer,” Vardy explains. He then continues: “I think I’ll think about it more when my career is actually over. “

Vardy trusts his club on the coaching issue

That’s why he won’t be looking ahead to the coming season until after his vacation. After Enzo Maresca’s move to Chelsea, it is still unclear under which coach the goalscorer will line up. “In soccer, players and managers come and go, but the main thing is that the club is always there,” explained Vardy.

In addition to the striker’s contract extension, the promoted club announced further personnel decisions on Friday evening: Marc Albrighton (with the exception of a six-month loan to West Brom, ten years at Leicester) is leaving the club on a free transfer, as are Kelechi Iheanacho and Dennis Praet. Former Bundesliga professional Jannik Vestergaard, on the other hand, has extended his contract until 2027.
