Eder Militao (26) has signed a new contract with Real Madrid. The marathon renewal process continues for the Whites
The generational change at Real Madrid is not only largely complete, but also fixed for the long term. The Whites, who have already extended the contracts of Vinicius Junior (until 2027), Rodrygo (until 2028), Eduardo Camavinga and Federico Valverde (both until 2029), have now also signed Eder Militao until 2028. They’re doing things by the skin of their teeth.
Real’s vote of confidence – this next contract extension was announced on Tuesday afternoon – comes at a time when the 26-year-old Brazilian has been working towards his comeback since last week. In the first league game of the current season, Militao – like regular goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois two days earlier – tore his cruciate ligament at the beginning of August. Whether the right-footed player will be able to return this season is still up in the air
Alongside David Alaba, who also tore his cruciate ligament, Militao was a regular central defender in Carlo Ancelotti’s squad until his injury – despite Antonio Rüdiger, who was still the club’s number three central defender at the time. It remains to be seen what the pecking order will look like next season when all the central defenders are fit again. This position is currently Madrid’s Achilles heel in the squad, with only veteran Nacho healthy alongside Rüdiger.
Like club legend Pepe, Militao joined the Whites from FC Porto in 2019 and has since played 143 competitive matches for the club. His goal contributions – eleven goals, five assists – are impressive. The trophy cabinet of the 30-time Brazilian international (two goals) includes two Spanish championships, a cup and a Champions League victory. His long-term contract extension is likely to add further titles with the Spanish record champions.
