The Los Cabos Open quarterfinal preview: Cameron Norrie vs. Adrian Mannarino

Can Adrian Mannarino win his first ATP World Tour title?

Adrian Mannarino is the 4th seed in the Los Cabos, reaching this quarterfinal clash with Cameron Norrie after beating Elias Ymer in the previous round. The 30-year-old Frenchman has played in five ATP World Tour finals and has lost all of them. The latest one was the Antalya Open in Turkey in June, where he lost in the final to Damir Dzumhur. He has won 13 challengers in his career and is one of those players who feature in many tournaments all-year round. His endurance is why he is ranked 25th in the world, despite not having a single major title behind his name. Mannarino is the highest ranked player to never win an ATP tournament.

Who is Cameron Norrie?

Cameron Norrie is currently ranked 74th and looking for his first ATP World Tour title as well. The 22-year-old Brit was actually born in South Africa to a Scottish father and a Welsh mother. He spent his childhood in New Zealand before moving to London as a teenager, mostly because of the funding available for tennis players in England. He gained British citizenship there too. In July 2017, Norrie won his first Challenger at Binghamton, a tournament previously won by Andy Murray and Kyle Edmund.

This will be the first career matchup between the two. At first glance, Mannarino is the favourite, but he will not have it easy against a motivated Norrie, who dispatched Feliciano Lopez in the round prior. The winner of this matchup will play the winner of Yoshihito Nishioka and Fabio Fognini in the semi-final and is looking at a potential clash with top seed Juan Martin del Potro in the final of Los Cabos Open.

Los Cabos Open 2018

Los Cabos Open is one of the newest hard-court tournaments on ATP’s schedule, having been inaugurated in 2016. Ivo Karlovic became the first Los Cabos Open champion, while Sam Querrey won the title in 2017. Querrey participated this year as well, but his attempt at defending the title in Mexico came to an abrupt end when he lost in the second round to Egor Gerasimov from Belarus. Gerasimov is del Potro’s next adversary.
