Chelsea FC have once again clinched a victory in the Premier League, which was hardly threatened against Tottenham (2-0). Instead, it offered an absolute highlight.
Eleven days after Chelsea had eliminated Spurs in the semi-finals of the League Cup, Thomas Tuchel’s team, which had been winless in the Premier League for four games, awaited ex-coach Antonio Conte again. And the Blues started like fire.
The home side overran their city rivals at Stamford Bridge and were dangerous almost every minute. The only problem: Chelsea did not reward themselves. The strong Ziyech initiated again and again, but Lukaku in particular missed very good opportunities (1., 33.). Kane, on the other side, was more cool-headed, but his supposed goal was disallowed due to an offensive foul (40th).
The second half began as the first had started: with brilliant Blues. This time, however, it hit behind Lloris – and not just once. Ziyech delivered an absolute highlight with his 18-metre shot into the corner of the net (47th), and eight minutes later Thiago Silva’s free-kick gave the Blues the lead.
With the 2-0 lead behind them, Chelsea managed the game so actively that Spurs could hardly breathe. Or for the follow-up goal. Bergwijn had a good opportunity from eleven metres (59th), it would take until the next approach by Kane (86th).
A little dissatisfied on the side of the Blues, for whom Werner and Havertz sat on the bench for 90 minutes, was probably also Lukaku in the end, who was also unsuccessful in the next attempt (69.). The bottom line, however, was that CFC secured their Champions League place – and ensured that Tuchel also won his seventh duel with Tottenham.
