Liechtenstein have finally put the longest losing streak in international soccer behind them. The opponent also helped
On September 8, 2021, only very few people can remember. A day like many others, without any major incidents. However, it was also the last time Liechtenstein did not lose an international match. As part of the World Cup qualifiers, the principality drew 1-1 in Armenia. The Eastern Europeans took the lead through former Dortmund player Henrikh Mkhitaryan in stoppage time of the first half (45.+5), while Noah Frick equalized for Liechtenstein in the 80th minute.
In the following two and a half years, Liechtenstein played 24 official matches – and lost 24 times. It was the longest losing streak in international soccer. Until March 26, 2024.
Liechtenstein got rid of this dubious record when they played in Latvia. In a friendly match in Riga, the score was 1:1 after 90 minutes, and the Latvians even helped out. Liechtenstein’s opening goal was the result of an own goal by Latvia’s Marcis Oss, a cross from the defender almost from the byline that ended up in his own box after just 14 seconds of play (1st).
The Latvians equalized in the 11th minute through Raimonds Krollis, but nothing more happened until the final whistle. Liechtenstein, who are coached by German coach Konrad Fünfstück, were thus able to celebrate a draw for the first time in exactly 930 days
At the beginning of September against San Marino
For Liechtenstein, the international window before EURO 2024 includes a friendly match against Albania on June 4 and a visit to Romania on June 8 for the 203rd-ranked team in the FIFA world rankings. The threat of defeat looms again in both games. At the start of the new international season, however, Liechtenstein can once again hope to score some points. Liechtenstein will host San Marino on September 5 on match day 1 of the Nations League 2024/25. The landlocked country is 210th in the world rankings, seven places lower than Liechtenstein.
