Tennis star Federer to play only doubles in farewell match

Swiss tennis star Roger Federer will not play singles at the Laver Cup to end his career. This was already clear beforehand, said the 41-year-old in an interview with the Swiss news agency sda. “But with the mode at the Laver Cup, I think I will be able to play the doubles on Friday night,” Federer explained.

He had therefore asked team captain Björn Borg if that was OK with him. “He said it was already a dream to see me on the tennis court again. I will give it a try. I was actually positively surprised by my level,” said the Swiss, who had previously trained with Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas.

The Laver Cup, which will be played for the fifth time in London from 23 to 25 September, pits a Team Europe against a Team World. On each of the three tournament days, there will be three singles and one doubles. In addition to Federer and Tsitsipas, record Grand Slam winner Rafael Nadal (Spain), Novak Djokovic (Serbia), Casper Ruud (Norway) and Briton Andy Murray will play for Europe. Team World consists of Felix Auger-Aliassime (Canada), Diego Schwartzman (Argentina), Taylor Fritz (USA), Alex de Minaur (Australia), Frances Tiafoe (USA) and Jack Sock (USA).
