Tennis star causes scandal

Daniil Medvedev fails in the quarterfinals at the ATP tournament in Dubai. During the match, he attracts attention for his tantrum – and for harsh accusations.

It just won’t get quiet around Daniil Medvedev! The former number one in the world of tennis had another meltdown at the ATP tournament in Dubai.

The Russian clashed with the chair umpire Adel Nour during his quarter-final match against the Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor. The umpire had previously penalized him for unsportsmanlike behavior.

“What did I get the penalty for?” Medvedev shouted, pointing his index finger angrily in the direction of the umpire, who replied, “You know exactly what you said to me.”

Medvedev was anything but satisfied with this explanation and continued to tease: “You’re pretty soft, aren’t you? Pretty soft.”

Medvedev senses “double standards against Russians”

When the referee didn’t come back much after that, Medvedev continued to curse to himself and identified a very specific reason for the punishment: “What is this? Is this a double standard against Russians?”

Nour shook his head and made a clear gesture that it was unacceptable. Medvedev angrily repeated his accusation, which also made Nour a little more emotional: “Daniil, I’m being very fair, I’m treating everyone the same.”

In terms of the match, things didn’t go according to plan either. The Russian lost in three sets (6-2, 6-7, 5-7) to the outsider from the Netherlands, missing four match points in the process.
The Russian had already received a penalty from Nour for exceeding the time limit at the tournament in Rotterdam at the beginning of February and had subsequently sworn at the Egyptian.

Now the continuation with an inglorious end: After his defeat, he refused to shake Nour’s hand – but later said he had apologized to the referee.

Medvedev repeatedly attracts attention with completely excessive outbursts of rage. He had already completely escalated at the first Grand Slam of the year, the Australian Open.
