Tennis rising star explains name change

Tennis newcomer Diego Dedura-Palomero changes his name in the middle of the Munich tournament. Why he made this decision.

Now just “DD” instead of “DDP”: German tennis rising star Diego Dedura-Palomero is parting ways with his double-barreled name, at least in sports, and will continue his career as Diego Dedura.

The 17-year-old announced this before his round of 16 match against Belgian Zizou Bergs at the ATP tournament in Munich on Thursday.

“I thought about it a lot. The nickname DDP will stay, of course. It might be too much for the umpires to say the third name as well. I think two names are enough.”

Dedura opts for his mother’s name

Dedura is the male form of the surname of his mother, Ruta Deduraite, a former Lithuanian tennis player. His father, Cesar Palomero, is a former tennis player from Chile.

“That’s why I chose Dedura. It’s my mother’s name, my whole family in Lithuania is happy with it, so I’m sticking with it,” Dedura explained his decision.

In Munich, Dedura, currently ranked 549th in the world, reached the round of 16 after defeating Canadian Denis Shapovalov.
