Ella Seidel is in the round of 16 in Stuttgart. The 20-year-old came back from a set down against Tatjana Maria.
Tennis hopeful Ella Seidel won the German generational duel with Tatjana Maria at the WTA tournament in Stuttgart and reached the round of 16. The 20-year-old from Hamburg defeated the 37-year-old from Bad Saulgau 3-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 after a hard-fought battle and will now face world number four Coco Gauff from the USA in the round of 16.
It was Seidel’s first match in the main draw of a WTA tournament since the beginning of February, and the young Hamburg native initially struggled to find a way to counter the experienced Maria’s slice shots. Seidel, ranked 124th in the world and 43 places behind Maria, then got into the match better and kept her nerve at the decisive moments. After almost three hours of play, she took her first match point to win.
On Tuesday, Jule Niemeier had already advanced to the round of 16 with a three-set victory in the all-German duel with Laura Siegemund. The Dortmund native will now face world number six Jasmine Paolini, who easily defeated Germany’s number one Eva Lys (Hamburg).
